As Halloween weekend brought forth many different celebrity costumes, tastemakers and fashion trendsetters alike can see how costume aesthetics can fit into everyday style.

To highlight a few costumes and trends seen this year, we can take a look at celebrities like Eugene Lee Yang, Conan Gray, Blake Lively, Lizzo and more.

In costumes, sometimes it is more than just the clothes that can be convincing of a different persona. Makeup is often a high point in Halloween and in the case of Lil Nas X and Lizzo, FX makeup came in to play.

The main difference between Halloween for famous people and for the rest of the world is the budget and the means. Fashion advocates can see custom-designed pieces like what Doja Cat or Kim Kardashian West wore, but oftentimes costume shopping is a little less catered for the average joe.

There were celebrities that represented costumes this year that could be pulled off by anyone such as Conan Gray and Blake Lively.

While Conan was able to target his Gen Z audience by writing on a T-shirt and going as Roderick Heffley from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, Blake Lively found some makeup she had at home to go as an actress from a black and white film as seen in ‘Turner Classic Movies’ productions.

Every Halloween there does tend to be a common theme or costume found from whatever was well-liked in pop culture that year. In 2021, the common denominator for many costumes was “Squid Game” as seen in costumes by Hayley Kiyoko, Eugene Lee Yang and James Charles.

A discussion point for Halloween costumes versus everyday wear can be the acceptance of androgyny and the breaking of gender norms.

With the example of Harry Styles, there was controversy surrounding his magazine cover wearing a dress. Meanwhile, when he wore a dress for his Dorothy from “Wizard of Oz” costume, much less uproar was received.

It is almost like androgyny is more accepted when it is shown in a costume one night of the year rather than any other event. Halloween represents a time when judgment seems a little less layered than other days.

Halloween trends and what famous people decide to wear for their costumes often end up highlighting trends we see in day-to-day style as well, even when it comes to eccentric fashion shows or carpet events like the Met Gala.
